Teddy Sheringham tips Manchester City to win the treble

Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has tipped Manchester City to win the treble this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side already have the Premier League title in safe keeping after successfully overhauling Arsenal on the run-in.

Man City face their local rivals in FA Cup final on Saturday, before switching their attention to the final of the Champions League against Inter Milan the following weekend.

In a recent interview with Betway Insider, the 1998/99 treble winner claimed that United are the only team who can defy the football betting odds and stop City.

“It couldn't have worked out any better because it looks like Manchester City will be beat Inter Milan in the Champions League,” Sheringham said.

“It's not a formality, but you expect it’s only Manchester United that can stop them from winning the treble, equalling what we did in 1999.

“There's no better club to stand in their way than Manchester United.”

Sheringham will be a keen observer at Wembley Stadium this weekend as Man City bid to emulate United’s treble winning feat.

The Red Devils’ success that season was built around a core of homegrown players, who understood what it meant to represent the city of Manchester.

Local born players will be a little thin on the ground this weekend, with both City and United largely reliant on foreign talents.

Despite this, Sheringham thinks the sprinkling of Mancunians on show will have a key role to play in the dressing room, and says United may have a hidden ace up their sleeve.

“You'd be interested to know what the foreign boys think about that situation,” Sheringham added.

“If they've only been there a short time, they might not realise how tough it is to win the treble.”

“The local boys will probably be trying to put it out there to make sure that they understand what it's all about.

“They might even get a visit from Sir Alex Ferguson to let everybody know and have a little pep talk.”

With a potential treble up for grabs this season, Man City will undoubtedly be eager to avoid any complacency against their biggest rivals.

The two sides were separated by 14 points at the end of the Premier League season, which highlights the gap between them at the moment.

However, United defeated City 2-1 in their most recent meeting in January, so it would be foolish to underestimate their chances this weekend.

Man City have emerged victorious in six of their 11 appearances in the FA Cup final, while United have triumphed in 12 of the 20 finals they have contested.

Winning the Wembley showpiece would put City in touching distance of matching United’s feat from 1998/99 and Sheringham has backed them to do it.

“I know it's a one-off game but I still can't see past Manchester City winning,” he said. “I want to say differently, but I see City winning 3-1.”
