City will be without Sergio Aguero for the visit of Liverpool this weekend. The Argentine has resumed training after missing the last three games with an injury sustained against West Ham, but won't be risked by Pep Guardiola. Fernandinho and Benjamin Mendy are also missing, but City's manager is relishing the challenge of taking on the league leaders.

“It is always nice to play against the strongest teams possible,” Guardiola said.

“Last year they were stronger. They have been an exceptional team for a long time, with an exceptional manager. It is nice to face them to improve our level.

“When you play against teams like Liverpool and other teams you always have moments where you have to suffer. We know it. We have to do it.

“We’ll try to use it to our strengths as much as possible. We know each other quite well. We have played each other many times.

“There will be up and down moments. We need to take our chances and be clinical.”

City won their last home game against Liverpool 4-0, courtesy of goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and an own goal from Joe Gomez. Overall City have won 49 of the 185 games played against Liverpool, with 46 draws and 90 defeats.
