Club World Cup: everything you need to know about City's campaign

Manchester City will take part in the upcoming Club World Cup, which features the best clubs from each continent. Following their Champions League win, the English outfit will look to take the tournament seriously and potentially add yet another trophy to their haul.

From European champions to global contenders: City’s road to the Club World Cup

Following some changes, the Club World Cup has a new format which aims to improve the competition Manchester City qualified for this prestigious tournament by winning the 2023 UEFA Champions League which crowned them the best in Europe. As they embark on this journey, Pep Guardiola's squad appears in good physical and mental condition. The intensity in training has been high and the players seem focused on the prospect of making history again. Despite the difficulties encountered in the last year, Guardiola's team is among the favorites for the final victory and therefore its progression is widely expected, as evidenced by the very low odds on it. However, for those who would still like to bet on this outcome and get a profit margin, they need to bet a considerable amount and it might come in handy to take advantage of the £30 free bet promotion that Paddy Power makes available to new subscribers. The team’s recent performances in domestic competitions indicate that they are hitting peak form at the right time, making them one of the strongest teams in contention to win the trophy on the international stage.

Squad updates, new faces, and City’s path through the group stage

Going into the competition, City have done well to keep most of their squad fit. There are a few niggles, but they probably shouldn't pose too much of a problem. City have had some changes to the squad:  a couple of departures over the summer and a couple of new faces coming into the team to provide some fresh energy. City have some exciting talent amongst their additions with Tijjani Reijnders at the top of the list, and a dynamic midfielder like him can definitely play an important role in the latter rounds of the competition. City will also take some confidence from their group in the Club World Cup, as it doesn't look overly threatening on paper which also allows them a better chance of advancing. In any event, City have strong squad depth and experience which will certainly help against teams that aren't familiar with the demands of the competition format.

They also have Pep Guardiola's tactical acumen to help them as they continue their push for another title, while their level of fitness should keep them ahead of teams that may not be fully fit under the pressure of the tournament format. There would probably be an expectation that they get through the group stage with comfort given their quality, meaning their qualification for the next phase of the tournament is very likely.

Tough opponents ahead: Juventus, Wydad, Al Ain and the fixtures that matter

Manchester City will play Juventus, Wydad Casablanca, and Al Ain during the group stage—which are all teams of different qualities and playing styles. Juventus probably represents the biggest challenge, with their very solid defensive structure and experienced players that are used to playing against high-pressure competition. Wydad brings an enthusiastic home crowd and the unexpected flair one tends to see with many North African teams. Al Ain—even less known—are also more than capable of upsetting teams. City will space out their fixtures over a grueling schedule, with Wydad first on June 17, then Juventus on June 20 within and Al Ain on June 24. These matches will not only showcase City's adaptability, but also present opportunities to break away from the club's many records. With such a depth of quality and international experience, the expectation is that Manchester City will be at the top of the group, but they will need to stay concentrated to minimize surprises from what may be a moderately challenging group stage.
