Can Manchester City go 3 in a row?

The 2019/2020 season of the Premier League is now underway, and many eyes are on Manchester City. The current champions will be vying for a treble-winning season after two years of success — a victory would mark a fifth title for the Sky Blues, and a big achievement for manager Pep Guardiola. The 18/19 season ended with a bang after Man City won their last 14 league games, finishing on 98 points, Liverpool as runners-up with 97 points. The league title was claimed on the final day of the season with a 4-1 against Brighton FC.

Their fight for treble glory begins

The 19/20 season has begun with a bang for Manchester City - and those making premier league predictions - with the club’s 5-0 victory over West Ham at their first game of the campaign. Raheem Sterling stunned the crowd with a magnificent hat-track, while Fernando Jesus and Sergio Aguero added their own strikes to thrash West Ham in defeat.

Some of the potential success for Manchester City relies on its summer transfers. This year’s transfers cost the team more than £100 million, which included Rodri — a decision that had Guardiola particularly excited. The 22-year old Spanish defensive midfielder  has previously played for both Villareal and Atletico Madrid, and was acquired for €70 million — a record transfer fee for Manchester City. He’s described as having an omnipresent physical presence, and his experiences at Atletico will surely add to Manchester City’s current line up.

Guardiola’s side also completed the signing of Juventus’s full back Joao Cancelo on a six-year deal for £27million. His technical proficiency and forward-thinking attitude is perfect for Guardiola’s style of game play; he is also versatile enough to play on both flanks. Fans and pundits are expecting Cancelo to play a prominent role in Manchester City’s lineup for the 19/20 season.

Adding his weight to the team is 22-year old defender Angelino, who has been resigned to Manchester City from PSV Eindhoven. Angelino played 34 league appearances for PSV, providing 10 assists and scoring one goal. He has signed a four-year contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2023. "City’s performances over the last two seasons have been incredible and I am very excited about returning and contributing to the Club’s bid for more success,” said Angelino about his return to Man City football club. "I believe my own game can develop under Pep’s management and I am very confident that the Club will go from strength to strength over the next few years," he added.

Do they have a chance to go for 3?

With so many great transfers made, and a roaring start to the season with an incredible opening victory over West Ham, Man City are in a strong position to secure a third championship win during this year’s Premier League season. Pep Guardiola is a fantastic manager and will surely be looking to add a fifth title for the Sky Blues to his record.
