Damage to his anterior cruciate ligament could result in winger missing much of the season
Leroy Sane has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, the club have confirmed.
A statement on the club website said: "He has undergone testing throughout the week, with a specialist doctor travelling to Manchester for further examinations to understand the extent of the injury.
"Leroy will have surgery in the coming week. Manchester City will provide Leroy with all the support and guidance he needs, and everyone connected with the Club wishes him a quick and full recovery."
Sane sustained the injury in the early stages of the Community Shield victory against Liverpool, and is now expected to miss much of the forthcoming season. The German winger had been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich this summer, but any transfer now seems highly improbable, given the serious nature of his injury.
Sane has two years left to run on his current deal at The Etihad, with the offer of a contract extension, and significant pay rise, still on the table.
