Riyad Mahrez named as PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for January

Algerian winger wins award following crucial contributions last month

Riyad Mahrez has been named PFA Fans’ Player of the Month after his impressive performances in January.

The Algerian recorded three goals and two assists in the month, with his first strike proving to be the decider in a 1-0 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, followed by another game winning performance as he netted a brace in City’s 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Mahrez led the league with five goal involvements in the month, as City kept the pressure on league leaders Arsenal.

The 31-year-old received a huge 45% of the votes to win January’s award, topping fellow nominees Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Nick Pope (Newcastle United), Dan Burn (Newcastle United), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), and Solly March (Brighton & Hove Albion).

The PFA and Vertu Motors have also announced winners from the WSL, EFL Championship, EFL League One, and EFL League Two with Khadija Shaw (Manchester City), Chuba Akpom (Middlesbrough), Josh Windass (Sheffield Wednesday) and Josh Umerah (Hartlepool) claiming the award.
