Raheem Sterling is suspended for the visit of his former side, following his red card against Bournemouth a fortnight ago. Vincent Kompany also misses out with an injury sustained whilst on international duty with Belgium, and manager Pep Guardiola rued the absence of his captain.

"I am sad. The last seven eight, nine games last season he played no problem. Pre-season, we took care of him and he played all three games. Now, unfortunately, we've lost him, but we will try and get him fit as soon as possible.

"The window is over. We thought we might need another one but we have Mangala, and Tosin and other players who can play that position."

There was brighter news for Guardiola, however, as Ilkay Gundogan is available for selection once again following a serious knee injury.

"He has training with us for the last few weeks," he said. "He’s part of the group."

City's last home game against Liverpool ended in a 1-1 draw, with Sergio Aguero netting for the Blues. Overall City have won 45 of the 176 games played against Liverpool, with 45 draws and 86 defeats.
